Character and emphasis In 1903 a commission was initiated to compile a nation-wide inventory of historic buildings and monuments in the Netherlands. Subsequently the Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg was founded in 1912. It maintains the national register of protected monuments, and advises national, regional and local authorities on matters of conservation, and it documents and researches the individual monuments. The library has its origin in the collection of the architect and architectural historian Jan Kalf, acquired in the 1930s. It focuses on the topography of the Netherlands, its former and present territories overseas (Indonesia, Surinam, Dutch Antilles) and its surrounding countries, architecture and (historic) building technology, town planning, garden architecture, and the preservation of monuments and historic buildings.
