Character and emphasis In 1988 the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Utrecht University opened its library, the result of a merger of some twenty departmental libraries. It houses the faculty's collections in the fields of language and literature (Classic, Romance, Germanic, Celtic, Slavonic, Oriental languages), history, history of art, archaeology, history of music and musicology, history of theatre and dance. Its holdings includes special collections of old and rare books, photographs, slides, sound recordings, and a copy of the Princeton Index of Christian art. The library of the Institute of the History of Art, founded in 1907, consists of about 80,000 books on the history of Western art and architecture from the Middle Ages onward; special emphases on iconology and iconography, emblem books, and the sources and history of the theory of art.
