Character and emphasis In 1988 the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of
Utrecht University opened its library, the result of a merger of some twenty
departmental libraries. It houses the faculty's collections in the fields of
language and literature (Classic, Romance, Germanic, Celtic, Slavonic,
Oriental languages), history, history of art, archaeology, history of music
and musicology, history of theatre and dance. Its holdings includes special
collections of old and rare books, photographs, slides, sound recordings, and
a copy of the Princeton Index of Christian art. The library of the Institute
of the History of Art, founded in 1907, consists of about 80,000 books on the
history of Western art and architecture from the Middle Ages onward; special
emphases on iconology and iconography, emblem books, and the sources and
history of the theory of art.
Special collections
- Iconology and emblematics: the library of the
Institute for the History of Art has always been famous for its
collection of books on iconology and emblematics. Of great importance
are the Van der Kellen Collection, the Max Friedländer Collection and
the Landwehr Collection (emblem books); these include 6,500 volumes of
early and rare imprints.
- A complete and updated copy of the Princeton
Index of Christian Art, including subscription to the online database
- Documentation on microfiche: The Marburger
Index (incl. France, Italy, Spain/Portugal, Benelux, Switzerland); Lugt
Art Sales Index; emblem books
- A collection of 350,000 photographs of works of
art, including the Corpus Gernsheim (photographs of drawings;
discontinued)
