Character and emphasis The Museum Catharijneconvent was opened in 1979 as the national museum for religious and ecclesiastical history and religious art (both Roman Catholic and Protestant). Its collections incorporate those of earlier institutions, such as the Archiepiscopal Museum of Utrecht, the Episcopal Museum of Haarlem and the Old-Catholic Museum Utrecht. Its library includes medieval and later manucripts, incunabula and old editions from the libraries of these museums and of other religious institutions, (e.g. the former Roman-Catholic seminary at Warmond and parish libraries dating from the 17th and 18th centuries). The modern component of the library reflects the museum's field of interest, and specializes in religious and ecclesiastical history, history of art and iconography, with an emphasis on the Netherlands.
