Character and emphasis The Centraal Museum is the general municipal museum for art and history of the town of Utrecht. The library reflects the collection of the museum. It collects publications about Dutch art since the 16th Century (i.e. Utrecht Caravaggists); modern art (emphasis on the early 20th Century); Dutch and international contemporary art; applied arts and contemporary design; costume; the history of Utrecht.

Special collections

  • The Rietveld-Schröder Archief: the personal archives of Gerrit Rietveld and Truus Schröder-Schräder, as found in Rietveld's famous house designed for mrs Schröder (which is now administered by the museum and open to the public). The archives includes a large number of Rietveld's plans, designs and drawings of buildings and furniture, letters and other documents and the library from the Schröder house, as well as an exhaustive documentation (articles, periodicals, books and photographs) of Rietveld and his work.
  • Extensive archives about the Utrecht artist Erich Wichman
  • Microfiche-collection of the Theo van Doesburg Archive (diaries, correspondence, texts, personal documents, photographs)

Information Centre
Part of the library is kept in the Information Centre of the museum. The current issues of periodicals, general publications and microfice-collections of the Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld Archives are therefore accessible for all visitors during museum opening hours (11.00-17.00, Tuesday-Sunday).
