Character and emphasis The Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (NAi) exists since 1988 as the result of a merger between the Stichting Architectuurmuseum (Foundation Museum of Architecture), the Nederlands Documentatiecentrum voor de Bouwkunst (Dutch Documentation Centre for Architecture) and the Stichting Wonen, all situated in Amsterdam. The institute's collection consists of a large number of architectural plans and designs and the archives of more than 300 Dutch architects and architect's firms active between ca. 1850 and 1950, and is continuously extended. This material is drawn upon in the preparation of exhibitions, and is the subject of scholarly research. The library supports and reflects the collections of the museum: it specializes in the history and theory of architecture, urban design and planning, social housing, garden and landscape design, applied art and industrial and graphic design of the Western world, with a special emphasis on the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th century.
