Character and emphasis The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has owned books since the 1880s serving to document its collection. In the 1920s the library became a separate department, which was given its own space in the newly built museum opened in 1935. The libray was run by the museum staff until 1962, when a specialist librarian was first appointed. The library staff now consist of a librarian and
five assistants. Its holdings reflect the collection of the museum itself, and emphasizes painting, drawing, decorative arts, art theory, iconography, art history, Christian art (European), medieval art, Renaissance art, 17th-18th centuries and 19th-20th centuries art, sculpture and engraving.

- The library holds an important research collection on the history of Surrealism, including many primary sources.
