Character and emphasis The splendid 17th-century 'Schielandshuis' - the single monument of the period to survive the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940 - houses both the municipal historical museum and the Atlas van Stolk. The Atlas van Stolk is a large collection of prints, drawings and photographs documenting the history of the Netherlands, brought together by the Rotterdam timber merchant Abraham van Stolk (1814-1896). The collection was continued by his heirs and, since 1967, by the Rotterdams Historisch Museum. It contains illustrated books, broadsheets, catchpenny prints and cartoons, posters, old board and card games, as well as maps, prints, drawings and photographs, all illustrating historical events and daily life in the Netherlands up to the present day. Many of the images in the collection are illustrations out of books or periodicals, and are filed in chronological order, by date of the event illustrated. The library contains illustrated books (as part of the collection proper), secondary literature and some historical and art-historical periodicals, chiefly on the graphic arts.
