Character and emphasis The Museum Princessehof was founded in 1917, and housed in an 18th-century mansion built for Marie-Louise van Hessen-Kassel, consort of Johan Willem Friso, Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of Friesland. The museum is dedicated to the ceramic arts; its holdings include most Asian ceramics, and European porcelain and faience since the Middle Ages, including floor and wall-tiles and modern and contemporary pottery. The library supports and reflects this collection, and is the most comprehensive library in the field of ceramic arts in the Netherlands. It also includes general works on the history of art, in particular the applied arts. Special collections The library belonging to the Ottema-Kingma Foundation, includes children's books of the 18th and 19th centuries, emblem books, costume books, topography (Indonesia) and travel books of the 17th to the 19th centuries.
