Size 50,000 artist's monographs, 40,000 thematic monographs, exhibition catalogues and artist's books; 80 current and 50 discontinued periodicals
Character and emphasis The library is part of the Municipal Van Abbemuseum, which was founded in 1936 by Henri van Abbe. In 1940 Van Abbe donated his private library to the museum, thus initiating the collecting by the museum of books, exhibition catalogues and periodicals documenting modern and contemporary art; in the 1950s the library developed into a scholarly library specializing in this field. Specific fields of interest are Fluxus, Zero and Conceptual Art.
