Character and emphasis In 1995 the Iconografisch Bureau (formerly Stichting Iconografisch Bureau) formally joined forces with the RKD foundation. The collection of this scholarly documentation centre for Dutch portraiture, consists of a card index based on the identity of the sitters and alphabetically arranged according to family name. This filing system refers to about 100,000 painted, drawn, engraved or photographed portraits in Dutch collections or in collections abroad; 50,000 reproductions, many with the matching negatives; thousands of portrait prints and photographs; and a collection of family albums containing so-called "cartes-de-visite" portraits. The library provides reference material for locating and identifying the sitters and the artists; catalogues of public and private collections and portrait exhibitions; monographs of portrait painters; works on topography, genealogy and heraldry, and other related subjects in the field of portrait iconography, e.g. costumes.
