Character and emphasis The Nederlands Openlucht Museum was founded in 1912 to preserve and present a selection of characteristic buildings, mostly rural, complete with their furnishings. Its aim is to aqaint visitors with the way of life of the Dutch people and its material reflexion in the countryside and the smaller towns from the 16th century to the present day. The library (1946) and the documentation archives (1948) support and reflect the the museum's objectives, specializing in European folklore and ethnology, Dutch national, regional and local history, socio-economic history, applied arts, industrial archaeology, daily life, regional costume, rural buildings and their decoration, all emphasizing rural areas. In 2002 the library has been resized in all, so he collections have been reduced to 50%. Most of the lost books are transferred to the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam.
