Character and emphasis The Van Gogh Museum, opened in 1973, was built to house the estate of Vincent van Gogh's family. It consists of a large number of paintings and drawings, the family archives - including the correspondence of Vincent and Theo van Gogh -, and the library and all documentation brought together bij Theo's son Vincent Willem. The Museum is the principal centre of Van Gogh studies in the world, and also specializes in the fine arts of the 19th century in general, in particular French art ca. 1850-1920. The museum is also responsible for the maintenance of the Mesdag Museum in The Hague. The documentation centre in the museum has compiled files (including photographs, reproductions and literature) not only on the objects in the collections of Van Gogh and Mesdag Museums, but also of every single work by Vincent van Gogh. The library reflects and complements the collections of the museum and the documentation centre, specializing in Van Gogh and his social and cultural background, and in the fine arts between ca. 1820-1920, with an emphasis on France and the Netherlands.
