Character and emphasis In 1987 The Jewish Historical Museum, established in 1980 as an off-shoot of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, moved into what had formerly been four seventeenth- and eighteenth-century synagogues in the heart of the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam. It documents all aspects of the history of the Jewish population of the Netherlands, and of Jewish religion, art and popular culture more in general. The resource centre, including the library, reflects this interest. Of particular art-historical relevance are the sections documenting ceremonial and religious art, works of Jewish artists, the history and iconology of Jewish art in general, and Jewish architecture (in particular synagogues).
