Character and emphasis The Dutch Institute in Rome was founded in 1904 to encourage research of Dutch history in the Vatican Archives. In the 1920s the activities of the institute extended to cover classical archaeology and the history of art. The library was instituted to support these activities. Its most important component is the Rome collection, covering the archaeology, history, history of art and topography of Rome. The section of art history is particularly strong on the Dutch and Flemish artists working in Rome; there is also a more general reference collection on Dutch art.
Access About half the collection on open shelves

Catalogues Automated catalogue, incorporated in the Dutch national union catalogue NCC under the auspices of the University of Groningen. The library also is part of the URBS Network catalogue, a consortium of 16 libraries located in Rome, including the Vatican Library.
