Character and emphasis The Istituto Universitario Olandese di Storia dell'Arte (Nederlands Interuniversitair Kunsthistorisch Instituut) was founded in 1958. Its primary objective is to promote research into Italian art and Netherlandish art in Italy. The library is an integral part of the institute and it covers painting, sculpture and architecture within the limits given above. In addition it focusses on drawing, prints, iconology and iconography, and it is particularly strong on the artistic relationship between Italy and the Low Countries.

- IRIS Online union catalogue: since 1993 the institute participates in IRIS, an international consortium of research libraries located in Florence, including the Biblioteca degli Uffizi, the Fondazione Roberto Longhi and the Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento (Italy),
the Berenson Library at Villa I Tatti (USA), the Opificio delle Pietre Dure
and the Università Internazionale dell'Arte. The IRIS libraries share a fully integrated library system, which allows online access to a wide range of important sources for the study of the history of art and the humanities.
