Character and emphasis The Institut Néerlandais was founded in 1957 as a centre promoting Dutch culture, literature and the arts, at the instigation of the collector and connoisseur Frits Lugt (1884-1970). It houses the Fondation Custodia, which administers the splendid collection of art and part of the art-historical library brought together by Lugt and his wife. The Fondation Custodia has continually expanded Lugt's collection of art, chiefly consisting of prints, drawings and early editions, and enriched it with an important collection of Indian miniatures. It has likewise expanded his research library, which supports and reflects the collection: it provides ample general documentation on all fields of the fine arts of the Western world, and a large specialized collection on Dutch art and on European prints and drawings. The Institut Néerlandais proper, maintains its own library documenting the history, culture, language and literature of the Netherlands in general, and its visual arts in particular.
Special collections The Fondation Custodia owns an important collection of 40.000 autograph letters by European artists, collectors and art-historians from the Renaissance to the present day.
